Once known only as tourist paradise, our image of Bali is now defined by the events of October 12, 2002, on a night when, in the main tourist area of Kuta, bomb blasts rang out that would echo the world over and usher in a new wave of fear. Some 185 people, the majority Australian tourists, lost their lives. In an instant, the very soul of this island paradise, a land known for welcome and an island of tranquility in the tumultuous Indonesian archipelago, was shattered. For years Bali was synonymous with affordable, high-end resorts; vibrant culture; beautiful beaches; and a timeless allure that drew expatriate artists, writers, and escapists from all over the world. Warnings from the international community are still in place, and though the Indonesian government has taken important steps to update security on its tourist cash cow, many balk at the thought of returning to the scene of such carnage. It's important to know that the peaceful Balinese still welcome visitors warmly, now even more so, and a visit to Bali is still replete with kingly comforts at cost, fine dining, beautiful resorts, and immersion in an ancient culture on an island dreamscape.
In a land of volcanic peaks, bubbling springs, tropical jungle, and stunning beaches, Balinese people live in constant relation with nature and their faith in Agama Hindu Dharma, a blend of Hindu, Buddhist, Javanese, and indigenous beliefs. The beauty and harmony of this faith colors every aspect of life, from fresh flowers strewn in obeisance or the calm of morning prayer at temple. Daily ceremonies abound -- tooth fillings, weddings, and cremations -- drawing elaborately dressed women with ornate fruit offerings balanced on their heads, and men unselfconsciously adorned with colorful sarongs and traditional headdress. You're sure to catch the soothing music of the gamelan, the music of the island, and many find that the pleasures here are serendipitous, lucky meetings with friendly locals; an impromptu fete; or a beautiful sunset shared with the right person. Despite the horror of recent events, Bali is still the beautiful island paradise that has attracted so many for so long.
